Obituary of Hazel Swainson

Eileen Hazel Swainson

Eileen Hazel was born to George and Muriel Jackson at Galahad Hospital on June 14, 1928, and passed away on August 21, 2018.  She lived with her parents near Alliance, Alberta for a short while until the family moved to a farm south of Sedgewick.  Hazel attended Green Valley School two miles from her home.  She worked as a secretary in a law office in Camrose for two years before marrying Harry Swainson in November 1946.  Their lives were busy and productive – raising purebred Hereford cattle, pigs and chickens along with grain farming.  In later years their horse interests expanded to raising and showing purebred Belgians – a hobby they both enjoyed until their retirement into the town of Sedgewick in 2002.

Hazel was a member of Lougheed Women’s Institute, Rebekah Lodge and C.J. Kinross Legion. She was an excellent seamstress and cook. She won many prizes for her knitting and crocheting.  In later years, Hazel began quilting for charity – namely “Quilts of Valour”, The Stollery Hospital, Ronald McDonald House and recently for Humboldt.

She leaves to mourn her passing, daughter Gayle (Darrell) McClements and son Garry (Debbie) Swainson.  Her nine grandchildren were very special to her and she will be missed by Anton Nerland, Corey McClements (Lisa Child), Leanne (Brent) Gaume, Brad McClements (Stevie MacRae), Brian (Melinda) McClements, Sebrena McClements (Jamie Hiebert), Christie Swainson (Dale Rose), Kara (Tom) Stang and Trent (Darla) Swainson; her twenty-one great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

Hazel also leaves brothers Bob, Gordon, Ron, Ed & Jim and their spouses.

Hazel was predeceased by her husband Harry Swainson in 2011 and her brother David in 1961.

In following Hazel’s wishes, there will be no service of remembrance.  Donations can be made to the Sedgewick Cemetery, C.J. Kinross Legion (Lougheed) or the charity of the donor’s choice.
