Obituary of Robert Hansen
Robert (Bob) Leonard Hansen of Sedgewick, Alberta, passed away after a brief illness at the Killam Health Care Centre on October 23, 2015, at the age of 84.
He will always be remembered with love by his wife Geraldine (Gerrie), daughter Linda (Eric) Jensen of Cochrane, son Neil of Victoria, granddaughters Joanne (Shawn) of Calgary, and Lovena and Naia Morrell of Victoria, originally from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, great-granddaughter Aliesha, great-grandson Christopher (Ashley), and great-great-grandsons Dante, Gabriel, and Alex. He is survived by his sister Gladys (Bob) Green of Edmonton, and predeceased by his father John, mother Sophie (Abrahamson), and eight siblings, John, Alice, Buster, Ralph, Marie, Bill, Gordon, and Shirley.
Bob was born and raised on the family farm in the Duchess area. He lived and worked in Brooks until 1956 when he and his young family moved to Calgary, where he drove semi-trailer trucks for H. M. Trimble & Sons (Trimac) for many years. Gerrie's parents, Hector and Helen Alexander, moved to Sedgewick in 1953, so the Hansen family knew the town well by the time they moved here in 1968. Bob bought Cumberland's Men's Wear on Main Street and ran it for ten years as Hansen's Men's Wear. After that he had several businesses in Sedgewick including tree moving, developing local properties, and the Esso Oil Agency. After nearly twenty years as the owner of Sedgewick Building Supplies, he sold the lumberyard and hardware and retired, reluctantly, at the age of 79. He then took up monitoring the stock market full time. He loved travelling and playing crib. Bob was active in the community he loved, serving on the volunteer fire department, the chamber of commerce, town council, and two terms as mayor. He was a member of the Kinsmen, the golf club, the curling club, the Masonic Lodge, and the Legion.
A memorial service will be held at the Sedgewick United Church on Saturday, November 7 at 2:00 p.m. Lunch to follow at the Sedgewick Legion. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the ALS Society of Alberta, Suite 250, 4723 - 1 St SW, Calgary T2G 4Y8, or to the charity of your choice.
