Obituary of Myrtle Joan Irene Matthews

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Myrtle (Myrt) Joan Irene Matthews on January 23rd, 2026 at the age of 89 in Camrose, Alberta.

Myrtle was born near Hanley, Saskatchewan on February 17th, 1936 to parents Marven Orsen✟ and Alice Renny✟. She grew up and helped out on their farm, with her siblings, Sylvia✟, Lester, Sandra, Charlotte, and Marjorie.

Myrtle was predeceased by her husband, Richard (Dick) Matthews✟; they married on September 7th, 1956. Together, they lived in Hardisty and then Sedgewick, where they raised their three children Linda Marie Torpe✟, Alice Louise Matthews, David Marven Matthews. One of her favorite things was spending time with her four grandchildren, Johanna Saulnier (Joey Saulnier, Peyton Torpe), Jason Torpe, Chandra Froehler (Andrew Froehler, Clara Froehler, Archer Froehler), Katie Berrecloth (Stuart Gilbert), and Richard Kole Berrecloth.

Myrtle worked as a secretary for various business throughout the years, including Sedgewick High School and the County of Flagstaff. She loved spending time with her family, singing, especially in the United Church choir, painting, gardening, embroidery, and reading.  She was a kind-hearted, loving devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, wife, sister, daughter, and friend, but she was also a tough, no-nonsense woman who wasn’t afraid to lay down the law if you crossed a line.

A service will be held to honour her memory at the Sedgewick United Church on Friday, February 13th, 2026 at 2:00 pm.

A time of fellowship and refreshments will follow at The Hive 4907 48 Avenue Sedgewick, Alberta.

Memorial donations can be made to Alzheimer Society of Canada, Diabetes Canada or Canadian Cancer Society.
