Obituary of Duane Alec Shepet

Duane Alec Shepet ("Shep")

July 6th, 1946 – July 19th, 2025

Duane was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta.  He attended Victoria School and graduated from Western Canada High School.

Duane began his career in the banking industry but a few years later realized it was too confining and structured for his way of life. His love of horses led him to the thoroughbred horse racing industry. It was there he gained the nickname "Shep".

Owning and training racehorses took Duane to the Arizona racetracks during the Alberta winter months - a place he grew to love. He continued to vacation in Arizona every year.

Upon retiring from active racing, Duane went on to enjoy working for many years in the horse racing offices at Edmonton Northlands Park, eventually ending his career at the Century Mile Racetrack in Leduc, Alberta.

Duane, 79, passed away from complications of a stroke he suffered in January of this year. His quiet reliability and honest, fair demeanor will be missed by all who knew him.

Duane was predeceased by his mother, Marjorie (Marge) and his father, Nicholas (Nick). He is survived by his sister, Linda Hutchinson (husband Syl) of Scottsdale, AZ; nephew, Colby Hutchinson (wife Erin), (great-nephew, Kekoa) all of Phoenix, AZ and niece, Nicole Hutchinson of Scottsdale, AZ. Duane's memory will remain in our hearts all of our days.

Duane will be interred in the family cemetery plot in Killam, Alberta.
